MaviKalem, which has been carrying out women-focused activities since its foundation, has added a new one to its efforts to prevent violence against women. Within the scope of the “Art Against Violence” project, which was implemented with the support of the Embassy of Ireland, painting workshops were held between March and August, where women showed their reactions to violence through art. The paintings produced in the workshops, which started in Istanbul and then included women in Adana and Hatay earthquake zones, will be exhibited on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
129 women painted against violence
In the painting workshops, women first talked about violence, shared their own experiences, and then expressed their reactions against violence through painting. The workshops were conducted by MaviKalem Board Member, Painter/Sculptor Meryem Tomak. In some workshops, women painted on small cloths and these paintings were combined by Tomak. In some workshops, they worked in groups to create larger paintings on larger cloths. In addition to Istanbul, 129 women participated in 10 different workshops organised with women disaster survivors in Adana and Hatay earthquake regions. The workshops were organised with the support of Avcılar Municipality, Esenyurt Municipality, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in Istanbul, Seyhan Municipality in Adana, Antakya Municipality and Defne Municipality in Hatay.
First exhibit in Büyükada on 25 November
The first exhibit of the paintings produced by the Art against Violence will be held on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The opening of the exhibition, which will last for two days at Büyükada Taş Mektep, will be held on Saturday 25 November at 14.00. Women who participated in the workshops, Erdem Gül, Mayor of Adalar Municipality, who supported the exhibition, and officials from the Embassy of Ireland, which supported the project, will also take part in the opening ceremony. The exhibit can be visited between 14.00-18.00 on 25 November and between 10.00-18.00 on 26 November.
